Placing a bird feeder on your property is one of the easiest ways to get started in bird photography.

Here are some tips on where to place your bird feeder and the camera gear you’ll need for the maximum photo opportunity.

Quick Tip: Birds are most active in the morning; place your feeder where sunlight will illuminate it from the camera side. Think about the positioning of the birds as they perch to eat. You most definitely want to avoid backlighting.

Quick Tip: Be aware of the background. The more non-descript it is, the better. You don’t want to create a gorgeous bird portrait only to have your trashcan visible behind it.

Advanced Quick Tip – Secure some light reflectors near the feeder but out of the camera’s field of view to reflect light onto the birds. These reflectors can be as simple as wooden boards painted with white or glossy silver paint.
