First, identify locations where birds are likely to thrive in urban settings. Parks, rooftops, bridges, and waterfronts are excellent spots to see birds in cities. Many urban birds, such as sparrows, starlings, and gulls, have adapted to the abundant food and shelter provided by human structures.

Search for raptors like peregrine falcons, which often nest on high buildings to mimic their natural cliffside habitats.

Observe the moments when human activity is minimal, such as early mornings, to witness birds in a more peaceful state. Incorporating urban elements—like graffiti-covered walls, industrial skylines, or bustling streets—into your composition offers context and contrast, boosting the visual appeal of your photos.

When photographing in cities, look for unique moments that highlight birds’ behaviors. A pigeon resting on a neon sign, a gull scavenging by food carts, or a hawk surveying from a skyscraper can inspire dynamic storytelling. Employ a longer focal length lens to isolate your subject and create depth, or try wide angles to capture the surrounding cityscape. Lighting is essential; the golden hour softens the often harsh urban tones and beautifully emphasizes the details of your subject.

Always be mindful of ethics and safety in urban settings. Avoid disturbing birds, and respect private property and city ordinances. Documenting birds in urban environments showcases their adaptability and adds a fresh perspective to your photography portfolio.
