Essential Tips for Capturing Stunning Duck PhotosStay Mobile and Prepared
How to stay mobile and prepared for successful duck photography
Note: This tip comes from Audubon’s article - Five Essentials for Successful Duck Photography
To photograph ducks in flight, feeding, or resting, mobility is key. Ducks landing into the wind require you to position yourself with the wind at your back, while photographing hens with broods means sneaking through shallow water surrounded by vegetation. Feeding ducks, particularly those on wild rice or resting on logs, are often found along lee or windward shorelines, so be ready to move. Staying in one spot won’t cut it—you need to travel light with minimal gear.
Chest waders are a must, as they allow you to kneel or sit in water while keeping most of your body dry. Opt for breathable camo waders that match marsh colors to stay comfortable and hidden.
Transporting gear in wetlands is another challenge, so use tools like a sled to keep your equipment safe and dry. A sled floats in deeper water and makes hauling your camera gear, extra clothing, and blind material across prairie potholes easier.
Complement this with a “blind bag,” a waterproof, camouflaged pack used by duck hunters. These bags are tough, affordable, and offer plenty of pockets for batteries, filters, and lenses. A quality blind bag can easily fit a DSLR with a 100–400mm lens, an extra camera body, and other essentials while keeping them organized and protected.
Lastly, be ready to conceal yourself on the go. With camo outerwear, simply hunkering down next to a bush or deadfall can provide enough cover. For extra concealment, carry lightweight camo blind material, which is easy to set up and won’t rot in wet conditions.
If you must cross open water to reach the best spots, a stable solo canoe or kayak is ideal for transporting you and your gear. Paddle into position, pull the boat into cover, and use the camo material to blend in seamlessly. Staying mobile, well-prepared, and concealed will drastically improve your chances of capturing dynamic, sharp duck photos that stand out.
