Tip #1—This is one of the most important tips you’ll read if you truly love the birds you photograph. Never leave anything behind. If you bring it in… you bring it out. This includes everything from candy wrappers to cigarette butts.

Many bird photography hotspots will often be populated by several bird photographers.

These etiquette tips will give you two huge advantages for your bird shoot. They will keep you on good terms with those around you, and if no one is around, they will keep you from scaring away any birds that were there before you.

Tip #2—Stop before entering a bird hide or clearing. Listen to what is happening around you. This will keep the birds from being disturbed and provide you with some insight into where they are and what they’re doing.

Tip #3—Take only the gear that you will be using. Nothing spooks birds more than constant rustling. The birds will be aware of your presence immediately but will be inclined to relax if you stop making noise.

Tip #4 —Silence your cell phone. You may leave it on vibrate, but if someone calls, do not answer – Keep this moment for your enjoyment and return calls and texts when you’re done.
